Opening of the 26th ASSEDIL Congress in Stella Maris College

23. 04. 2025

This afternoon, the 26th ASSEDIL Congress officially opened in the heart of Stella Maris College with a spirit of unity and purpose. Following a reflective opening prayer led by ASSEDIL, we were welcomed by Brother Ben Hanlon, Visitor of the IGBM District, and Mrs. Marta Martínez, President of ASSEDIL, who both set the tone for the days ahead with messages of hope, mission, and shared vision. Mr. Stephen Cachia provided a detailed orientation, guiding participants through the program and practical aspects of our time together. A heartfelt presentation of the IGBM District gave us insight into the dynamic Lasallian presence here in Malta. Brother Santiago Rodriguez Mancini delivered a moving Opening Address, reminding us that 2025 is the Year of Lasallian Spirituality—a moment to deepen our spiritual leadership and commitment. The evening concluded with the ASSEDIL General Assembly and a festive gala dinner, rich in Lasallian hospitality.

What a beautiful start!

The second day of the ASSEDIL Congress

24. 04. 2025

The second day of the ASSEDIL Congress began with a peaceful prayer service animated by the South Belgium District, grounding us all in the spiritual theme of our gathering. Brother William Mann opened the morning session with his first intervention, guiding us through the ‘Meditations for the Time of Retreat’ and helping us reflect on how these time-honored texts still speak to the challenges and hopes of Lasallian school leaders today. Following the keynote, participants divided into language-based workshops where they explored the practice of interior prayer. With sessions in English, French, and Spanish, the morning was alive with dialogue, contemplation, and practical application. Conclusions and group sharing wrapped up the session beautifully before everyone headed to lunch.

In the afternoon, delegates embarked on a cultural adventure to the capital city of Valletta. The group explored the historical and spiritual richness of Malta, walking through the Parliament route to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, marveling at the views of the Grand Harbour. Participants then visited the iconic St. John’s Co-Cathedral, where the legacy of Maltese heritage and faith came alive. The experience concluded with ‘The Malta Experience’ audiovisual show, offering a powerful narrative of the island’s history. For many, crossing by traditional Maltese boats added a touch of charm and connection with local culture. The evening brought us to De La Salle College for a vibrant buffet dinner, celebrating both Lasallian fellowship and Maltese cuisine. A perfect blend of culture and communion.

The third day of the ASSEDIL Congress

25. 4. 2025

Today’s morning sessions were a masterclass in how Lasallian educators creatively bring spirituality into the classroom. After a reflective prayer service led by the ARLEP District, the morning was filled with inspiration. Different speakers shared brief presentations on spiritual practices, including Godly Play, Prayer Spaces, HARA, Silent Walks, and youth engagement projects from France. These diverse approaches highlighted how spirituality can be woven into school life in practical and deeply meaningful ways. After the coffee break, participants chose two experiential workshops to attend, immersing themselves in these practices first-hand. Sharing and small group conclusions offered a rich chance to reflect on new possibilities. A morning full of spiritual innovation and exchange.

This afternoon, we travelled inland to Rabat and the ancient city of Mdina, the silent city. Participants had free time to explore the charming streets, historic palaces, and bastion views. At 6:00 pm, we gathered at the Mdina Metropolitan Cathedral for a solemn Mass, celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Galea Curmi. The service, animated by the sixth form band, was a profound spiritual moment that brought together the Congress community in worship and reflection. The day closed with a festive dinner at the iconic Bacchus Restaurant, nestled within Mdina’s city walls. The atmosphere was full of warmth, music, and shared memories. A truly unforgettable day.

The last day of the ASSEDIL Congress

26. 4. 2025

On our final day, the Congress began with a quiet moment of prayer led by the ARLEP District, grounding us in gratitude. Mr. Gregory Leonard opened the morning with the third keynote, ‘Fill My Well,’ reflecting on how Lasallian leaders can nurture their own spirituality. A round table discussion followed, sparking open dialogue about personal and communal growth. After the coffee break, participants engaged in group work, evaluating their experiences, sharing what inspired them most, and reflecting on what they will bring back to their schools. Brother William Mann offered a concluding reflection, summing up the spiritual journey we’ve taken together. The morning ended with heartfelt messages from Brother Superior General Amin Luistro and ASSEDIL President Marta MartĂnez, formally closing the Congress.

As the Congress drew to a close, participants shared their goodbyes over lunch, exchanging final reflections and contact details. The last stand-up lunch was a celebration in itself—with good food, laughter, and promises to stay connected. Delegates began their departures with full hearts and renewed spirits. Over the past four days, Lasallian educational leaders have not only deepened their understanding of spirituality but also forged stronger bonds across borders and languages. The sense of mission, fraternity, and shared purpose that filled every moment of the Congress now travels with each participant back to their communities. Thank you, Malta, for your warm welcome and hospitality. Until we meet again.
